Community Composting Demonstration Sites Application Pack

Introduction

‘Growing with Compost’ is a partnership project lead by the Community Composting Network (UK) and involving the Czech University of Agriculture in Prague, the Ecological Recycling Society (Greece), Friends of the Earth Slovak Republic, IASON vocational training centres (Greece) and Re-use and Recycling European Union Social Enterprises (RREUSE – Europe wide). The project is funded by the EU Grundtvig programme which is part of the wider Socrates adult education fund.

The purpose of the project is to develop a range of training and educational resources that can help adult learners from across Europe to develop their own community composting schemes that will provide social and environmental benefits for their local communities.

The principal objectives of this project are:

  1. To provide the training and educational resources to encourage adults to actively participate in the process of sustainable organic waste management by composting.
  2. To support adults learners in the increased development of social economy composting initiatives that will help meet local, national and European organic waste management targets.
  3. To provide adult learners with the tools to create active communities, enliven urban and rural regions and to create new jobs for socially excluded people and the long term unemployed.
  4. To increase partnership working between organisations promoting social economy composting at a European level.

A European Network of Demonstration Sites

As part of the project the partners will be setting up a network of demonstration sites around Europe. The purpose of the network is to enable people to learn about the nature of running a community composting scheme in the most practical and hands on way possible. This is based on the assumption that reading written materials (although valuable) is no substitute for seeing actual schemes and learning from the people involved in establishing, managing and operating them.

The network will aim to include a diverse range of projects from across Europe. This should include:
  • Urban projects
  • Rural projects
  • Projects collecting kitchen waste
  • Projects collecting garden waste
  • Projects promoting home composting
  • Large schemes working at a municipality level
  • Small local schemes
  • Projects promoting social inclusion
  • Projects creating employment and training opportunities
  • Projects working with adults with learning difficulties
  • Projects working with people with mental health problems

What It Will Mean To Be a Demonstration Site

Demonstration sites will be promoted across Europe via the project website (www.growingwithcompost.org) and through handouts at training events, as examples of best practice in community composting. As a result of this they will be expected to host visits by adult learners from across Europe.

Sites may charge trainees for the costs of hosting a visit. European visitors from countries other than the host’s will be able to source grant funding from the Grundtvig three programme in order to pay for the costs of hosting a visit.

Criteria for Becoming a Demonstration Site

In order to apply to become a demonstration site, a site must be able to meet the following criteria.

Essential Criteria:

In order to be part of the demonstration sites network it is essential that each site:
  • Is willing to host visits by individuals and groups to tour the site and learn about the project (with the understanding that a demonstration site may reasonably try to seek remuneration for the time involved)
  • Is willing to be publicised across Europe as a demonstration site
  • Has staff who are willing to act as and when required as trainers at events, not based at the demonstration site, but organised by the programme (on the assumption that they will at least receive all their expenses).
  • Is fully insured including public liability insurance
  • Is kept clean and tidy
  • Has carried out a full health and safety risk assessment
  • Ensures that the site at all time complies with the risk assessment
  • Meets the legal requirements of operating a composting facility in their country
  • Is able to demonstrate uses of compost
  • Has social or adult education outputs as well as environmental ones

Desirable Criteria:

In addition to the essential criteria it would be desirable for demonstration sites to be able to:
  • Either have or be able to access local class room facilities for training events and seminars
  • Has staff that are able to speak English
  • Is able to demonstrate the uses of compost
  • Is able and willing to provide documentation on how it was set up and is operated to groups visiting the site
