Description:
The Ecological Recycling Society has been actively composting since 1995 in the small backyard of the office at Mamai str. in Athens. With the help of GWC project, the place has had more compost bins to show to the public and ERS is able to demonstrate how home composting is performed in a garden or on the balcony. Visitors of ERS can get copies of the toolkit produced by the project and take a small tour in our backyard to see how vermicomposting works and what does the final product of composting looks like.

Description:
“Nostos” is a Therapeutic Community run by KETHEA, which is an organisation working with recovering drug addicts. It is situated on the eastern side of the island of Salamina, in the location called Selinia. The Community is located in a large 20th century house surrounded by an enormous garden of 2000 square metres.
The members of the community have set up their own composting project, in co-operation with the Ecological Recycling Society of Greece. It uses a specially designed bin in which all the kitchen and garden waste produced on site is composted. The end product is then used as a fertilising product for the garden plants.
The project plans to expand to serve the local community.

3. “From waste to resources” Composting Olive tree waste

Description:
The site is based on organic farm in the mountainous region at the eastern shore of Pelion peninsula at the Aegean Sea. The nearest village is Neohori /Pelion. The 1,500 m2 of the plot contain Olive trees, orchard, legume garden, herbs and wild forest /maccia that also produces its own herbal shampoos.
We use the waste of olive trees, orchards, garden, kitchen and plant extraction to make compost, with the addition of animal manure, hoof and horn meal /chips, ashes, sand, lime and plant extracts. Grass and branches are cut by shredder and in order to start the aerobic reduction process we add micro organisms. The use of EM Effective Micro organisms for anaerobic composting and “bokashi” production is in testing stages. We work on know how transfer from Austria, Germany, Switzerland on CMC Composting (Controlled Microbial Composting) and EM-technology.
The site has been involved in a number of organic growing initiatives and the demonstration of composting practices.
