Description:

Based in a Romany community, the project carries out a number of composting and waste management activities. This includes waste minimisation and source separation of different waste streams.

The municipality maintains the composting site employing a member of the local Romany community. Composting in the community saves them waste transportation costs and also leads to a decrease in fly-tipping and illegal waste disposal in the local area.

Description:

The pilot training project; “I want to be an ecological farmer!” is part of complex social programme called “Establish an eco-farm together!”. The farm will be located near municipality of Rudlov in Slovakia.

The project is currently in its first phase which will be completed by the end of 2008. The principal aim of this phase is to develop the knowledge, motivation and technical abilities for organic and ecological agriculture amongst socially disadvantaged groups and people in the local area. This includes the long-term unemployed, the local Romany community from the region of Hlinné and young people – mostly Romany – who are leaving foster homes in East Slovakia. Work placements will also gradually be offered to University graduates who have studied the social economy and ecological and organic agriculture.

Description:

The project supports the development of home and community composting. The municipal site serves the areas were people live, who don’t have gardens and therefore can not home compost.

The project consists of following activities:

1 – Home Composting Support – creation of promotional material, buying of home compost bins and the provision of support for home and community composting.
2 – Municipal Composting – creation of complementary municipal composting facilities for garden waste from public areas and domestic waste from households who can’t home compost. The municipality provides equipment and support.
3 – Establishment of Amount Collection (system PAYT) – A pay as you throw collection system has been developed to reduce the amount of residual waste. Residents pay per bag of waste disposed of and this is monitored using computer software.

Description:

Individual households can bring their domestic garden waste and fruit and vegetable peelings to composting site in a public area. The municipality provides trained staff to manage the site. Compost is made in 3 composting bins. The process is controlled from time to time and turned as needed.

Description:

The project composts garden waste from municipal landscaping activities, green waste and old flowers from local cemeteries and fruit, vegetable and garden waste from local households. Householders bring their own waste to 2 composting sites which were established and are maintained by the municipality. Compost is made in windrows. All process is controlled from time to time and turned as needed.

The municipality also runs a programme for the support and promotion of home composting.

Description:

Town Office of Modra established a “Composting Office” in 2006. Its aim is development of home and community composting in the town and to prepare for the development of kerbside collection services for biodegradable waste in the municipality.

It has trained 15 compost masters, who visit individual households to give them advice on home composting and to promote the services available to them. They help with the realization of composting, collect information about the ways in which biowaste is managed and distributed information and publicity materials. They organise with the staff of the Compost Office events and promotional activities for the general public and schools such as lectures, demonstrations and excursions.

Three composting demonstration sites have been established through the project. One demonstration site is based around an exhibition of home composting bins and methods while the other two community composting facilities in local schools.
