The demonstration site was built by the clients of the centre and was set up as a part of the garden workshop group. This group involves 5 to 10 adults with learning difficulties who look after the gardens around the centre, the house plants inside the centre and make gardening related craft products to sell to the public.

The site composts waste produced on site, including kitchen waste from the café, and some garden waste from the local area. The process is maintained by the adults with learning difficulties with support from their care workers. The compost is then used in horticultural activities on site.

Description:

The project was started as an initiative of the inhabitants of a high rise housing estate in the Řepy area of Prague. It was given financial support by Prague’s municipal authorities in 2006.

The residents group initially carried out a survey of their fellow inhabitants, to ascertain whether they would separate their household biodegradable waste. More than one third of the households surveyed (35) decided to cooperate actively.

Each householder has a key to the lockable unit and takes their own waste out to be composted. They can then take finished compost for their own use and any surplus is used in the communal greens on the estate.
